I've been busy trying to write up a pattern for my new favorite thing: a Crochet Kimono Cardigan.
Kimono-style shrugs are all the rage right now, and when I came across this amazing Mandala yarn by Lion Brand I knew I wanted to try making a Kimono of my own!

Things to Make: Big Button Scarf and 'About Crochet' Contest!

Are you familiar with the work of Dutch crochet designer Elisabeth AndreĆ©?  If not you NEED to go check out her lovely blog, About Crochet!  She shares such amazing projects and patterns there!

She has been holding a fun crochet contest since December!  For the contest we were given three different stitch patterns to choose from, and were asked to make one of the following:  a scarf or shawl, a pair of fingerless gloves, or a cushion cover.

I knew the moment I saw the stitch patterns that I wanted to make a chunky Big Button Scarf!  The texture of the stitches just looked so cozy and elegant!

For this project I used Red Heart Boutique Midnight Yarn in Harvest Moon.  The yarn is super soft and has just a tiny bit of sparkle to it!  I LOVE this yarn!! So pretty!

I used a size N (9.00mm) hook, because I wanted the scarf to be light and stretchy, but still have that chunky texture!

I used the first variation of the chain-single crochet stitch pattern.  Here is the basic stitch:

chain-single crochet (ch.sc)

Insert hook into stitch, yarn over hook and draw up a loop (2 loops on hook), yarn over hook and draw through the first loop on hook (2 loops on hook), yarn over and draw through both loops on hook (1 loop remains on hook).
The basic pattern for the first variation of the stitch can be found HERE.

I altered the basic pattern by basically doubling the width to 31 sts. The pattern I used looks like this:

Ch 31.
Row 1:  1 ch.sc in the 3rd ch from hook, 1 ch, *sk 1 ch, 1 ch.sc in the next ch, ch1*, repeat from * to * to end of row, end with 1 ch.sc in the last ch, ch2,  turn.
Row 2:  1 ch.sc into the first ch1 space, ch1, *1 ch.sc in the next ch1 space, ch1*, repeat from * to * to end of row, end with 1 ch.sc into the top of the turning ch2, turn.
Row 3 (and on):  Repeat Row 2.

I used an entire 2.5oz skein of yarn, and the final measurements for my scarf are approximately 9" wide by 33" long.  I added a BIG button (2" in diameter) to one of the corners of the scarf.

The great thing about this stitch is that it has a lot of stretch...so I didn't even make a button hole!  I just pulled the button through the scarf itself...makes it very versatile!!

What do you think?

Crochet Hobo Bag

Ch 41.
Row 1:  Sc in 2nd ch from hook. Sc in each ch across. (40 sts)
Row 2 - 12:  Ch 1, turn.  Sc in each sc across.
Row 13:  Ch 1.  Do NOT turn.  Working along end, work 12 sc evenly.  At corner ch 1, sc in same sp.  Working along beginning edge, work 40 sc evenly to end.  At corner ch 1, sc in same sp.  Working along end, work 12 sc evenly.  At corner ch 1, sc in same sp.  Working along next edge, sc 40 evenly to beg.  Join with sl st to first sc.
Row 14:  Ch 1. Working in back loops only, sl st around, chaining 1 in each corner.  Join with sl st to beg ch.  This creates the rectangular base of the bag.

Base of bag

Row 15:  Ch 1, turn.  *Sc in next 40 sts.  Sk corner.  Sc in next 12 sl st.  Sk corner.*  Rep from * to * one more time.  Join with sl st to beg sc.
Row 16 - 18:  Ch 1, turn.  Sc in each sc around. Join with sl st to beg.
Row 19:  DO NOT TURN.  Ch 3, dc in next 11 sc.  Sk next sc.  Dc in next 38 sc.  Sk next sc.  Dc in next 12 sc.  Sk next sc.  Dc in next 38 sc. Sk last sc.  Join with sl st to beg ch.  DO NOT TURN.
Row 20 - 34:  Ch 3, DO NOT TURN.  Dc in next dc, and in each dc around.  Join with sl st to beg ch.
Row 35:  Ch 3, DO NOT TURN.  *Dctog over next 2 sts.* Rep from * to * around.  Join with sl st to beg ch.
Row 36 - 40:  Ch 1, DO NOT TURN.  Sc in same st.  Sc in each st around. Join to beg with sl st.

For Strap:

Row 1:  Sl st in next 6 st.  Ch 1, sc in next 8 sts.  Ch 1, turn.
Row 2 - 50 (Or however long you want the strap to be!):  Sc in each sc across, Ch 1, turn. On last row, fasten off, leaving a long tail of yarn.
Using needle, st strap to opposite side of bag with whip st.  Fasten off, weave in ends.

NOTE:  The base of my bag measures about 14.5" x 4" and it's about 14" tall, not including the strap.  I switched color on my bag on row 29 to add some contrast.  I also added a simple crochet flower as an accent.

I think this bag would make a great beach bag or catch all bag...or even a reusable grocery bag!  I hope you have fun trying this pattern out!!
